Bag-On-Valve Technology

Aerosol Valve / Bag-On-Valve, Continuous
Beauty, Color Cosmetics, Skincare, Personal Care, Home Care

Engineered with Patented Bag Construction to Preserve Product Integrity and Deliver Reliable Dispensing Across a Broad Range of Formulations

Bag-on-Valve (BOV) is a barrier aerosol system designed to keep the formula separate from the propellant to maintain integrity throughout the product lifecycle. The compressed dispensing mechanism uses air or nitrogen, eliminating the need for VOC propellants.

The patented 4-ply Robust Weld bag design supports resistance against external packaging stressors and ensures compatibility with highly active cosmetics and complex hybrid formulations.

BOV delivers a continuous spray without the need for priming and supports multi-position, 360˚ dispensing. This enables a convenient, controlled application of product particularly for direct-to-skin uses such as sun care and shaving gels. Bag-on-Valve also has a high evacuation rate of up to 99%, helping to reduce product waste.

The system is highly adaptable with male or female valves and integrates with a wide range of aerosol actuators including twist to lock and hooded formats. Additional configuration options including dip tubes are also available to support more viscous and foaming products and enable flexibility across application needs.

With a wide aerosol portfolio and in-house technical expertise, we support customers during development and production. We help ensure formula compatibility and a high-quality dispensing experience.

Why Choose Bag-on-Valve Technology for Aerosol Packaging

A person uses Runway, a Dual Trigger Aerosol to spray sunscreen onto the back of another person wearing a beige bikini top, set against a plain beige background.

Enables Efficient Filling and Line Compatibility

BOV integrates seamlessly into existing aerosol filling lines. With female valve configurations, the fast-fill system enables up to 30% faster filling compared to standard designs due to a larger orifice. Male valve options fill through the stem at speeds comparable to continuous valves. Bag-on-Valve uses compressed air or nitrogen, eliminating the need for propellant filling or specialized gassing equipment.

Delivers a Consistent, Continuous Dispensing Experience

BOV delivers a smooth, continuous spray with no priming required and supports use at any angle including 360° dispensing. This enables a controlled, even application with a consistent product experience from first to last use.

Maintains Product Integrity with Patented Barrier Technology

The multi-layer bag design ensures the product remains separated from the propellant to help maintain formula integrity across a wide range of applications.

How Bag-on-Valve Aerosol Technology Works

Bag-on-Valve uses a multi-layer internal bag inside of an aerosol can that separates the formula from propellant. Compressed air or nitrogen is used in the can to create pressure to dispense the formula without the need of direct contact with the propellant. As the product is used the bag collapses to maintain consistent pressure and continuous, controlled dispensing through the product lifecycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Bag-on-Valve system separates the product from the propellant to help maintain formula integrity. It can also support more challenging formulations, such as gels, lotions, and highly viscous products, that may not dispense effectively with other valve systems. The bag helps protect the formula from oxidation and light exposure, making it well suited for products with active ingredients, such as vitamin C or retinol, or formulas with reduced preservative content.

Yes. Bag-on-Valve systems are designed for 360° dispensing and can be used at any angle including upside down, while maintaining a consistent spray performance.

Bag-on-Valve is compatible with a wide range of viscosities including gels, creams, liquids and lotions. Matching appropriate system configurations such as actuators and dip tubes can support different dispensing requirements while maintaining a full brand image.
