Breath-Actuated Metered Dose Inhaler

Inhalers, Breath Actuated Inhalers

Aptar Pharma’s Breath Actuated Inhaler (BAI), is used in conjunction with a pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) to automatically trigger the inhaler spray actuation when the patient is breathing in. This can greatly reduce patient coordination errors and improve their compliance for all patients with asthma and COPD.

Our BAI metered dose inhaler can also integrate a dose counting function to remind patients of the number of doses remaining for chronic respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD.

Breath-Actuated Inhaler Improves Patient Compliance in Asthma and COPD

Patient Focused Design

Aptar Pharma developed the Breath-actuated inhaler to make  respiratory drug delivery simpler for patients with asthma and COPD . The device is small, lightweight and portable and virtually eliminates the patient coordination errors sometimes seen with traditional pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) devices.

Enhanced Patient Compliance

Our Breath Actuated Inhaler (BAI) coordinates the release of the drug product from the metering valve, which helps to overcome patient coordination techniques and the need for inspiration (flow) rates. Aptar Pharma’s BAIs are designed with the patient in mind.

Lifecycle Management Opportunities

Utilizing Aptar Pharma’s proprietary Breath Actuated metered dose Inhaler (BAI) opens numerous lifecycle management opportunities and can support brand differentiation strategies.

Integrated Development and Support Services for OINDP

Aptar Pharma offers fully integrated development and support services including product design and method validation, analysis of drug device interactions, analytical testing, formulation development as well as regulatory support to help advance your Breath-actuated inhaler  product more efficiently.

Designed with patients in mind

Aptar Pharma’s dedicated R&D teams designed the Breath-Actuated Inhaler to make the inhalation process easier for patients suffering from asthma or COPD. Patient compliance is critical for these chronic diseases in order to manage their care. Our BAI is simple to use for patients of all ages, including children and the elderly. It is small, lightweight, and can easily be carried in a purse, pocket or bag for portability.

Patients simply place the mouthpiece in their mouth and breathe in. The BAI senses the inhalation and automatically coordinates the actuation of the metering valve to release the product spray. This means the patient does not have to even think about coordinating inhalation with actuation, like they would with conventional pMDI inhaler systems. Some patients with low inspiration rates (flow rates) can benefit from Breath Actuated Inhalers as they ensure higher levels of dose consistency.

Enhances Patient Compliance

A breath-actuated inhaler can enhance patient compliance as it makes the drug delivery process simple and essentially eliminates coordination errors. Our BAI coordinates the release of the drug product from the metering valve, which helps to overcome patient coordination errors and the need for high inspiration (flow) rates. By minimizing patient errors via this technology, the BAI delivers higher patient compliance and adherence. Aptar Pharma’s Breath Actuated Inhalers are designed with the patient user in mind. They are small, lightweight, and portable, capable of fitting in purses, pockets, or bags so they are ideal for staying with the patient. Always ready when needed.

In addition, our BAI devices include an integrated dose counting mechanism so the patient can always have confidence in the number of doses remaining and help track doses taken. Aptar Pharma matches the metering valve with both the BAI triggering and dose-counting mechanisms resulting in a fully integrated and intuitive solution that is easy to use by patients.

Lifecycle Management Opportunities

Utilizing Aptar Pharma’s BAI opens numerous lifecycle management opportunities and can support brand differentiation strategies. Our proprietary Breath-Actuated Inhaler technology provides many functional advantages for your inhaler product. We can integrate our BAI, optimized metering valves, and digital dose counter in one single device that comes in a range of color options, which open a world of product differentiation opportunities. Whether it’s a new inhalation product or a repositioned drug product, Aptar Pharma’s Breath-actuated inhaler can prove a viable option for inhalation products.
