Product Sustainability

Sustainable material sourcing is a major priority for our customers and stakeholders

As concerns about non-renewable resources and environmental impacts grow, we understand that sustainable material sourcing is a major priority for many of our customers and stakeholders. To better address this area of increasing interest, Aptar launched a Sustainable Materials Taskforce in 2015. In 2018, Aptar introduced a dedicated Product Sustainability Team within our Innovation Excellence pillar.

Aptar has also partnered with like-minded organizations to reinforce our pledge to care for our planet and reduce our environmental impact, particularly in regards to recycling, reducing plastic waste, and promoting a more circular plastics economy. For Aptar, the definition of Sustainability in packaging aligns with a circurlar economy approach to plastic and waste, which is:

  • Eliminate items that are not needed, which can apply to unnecessary plastic components and lighter weight material
  • Innovate so that needed plastic and packaging is designed to be safely reused, recycled or composited
  • Circulate used plastic and packaging to keep it in the economy and out of the environment

We believe that 100% of all plastic packaging should be recycled and we are well positioned to help our customers achieve their own objectives, many of which are to achieve packaging that is 100% recyclable or reusable by 2025. Today we do have all-plastic solutions that are recyclable depending on the local recycling program.

It’s also up to packaging manufacturers to be active and public advocates for both the industry transformation and the policy interventions needed to deliver our vision of 100% of packaging being first collected and then recycled.

Aptar is committed to achieve 10% recycled content by 2025 for our dispensing solutions for the beauty, personal care, home care, food and beverage markets. This is an evolving target due to the limited availability of material suitable for our markets because of regulatory constraints and customer policies. Aptar is actively working to identify and qualify new technologies in this space, such as post-consumer resins and food contact certified recycled resins.

We value our partnerships through out this process, working closely with our supply chain, and partnering with our customers to revisit our existing product portfolio as well as new product offerings. For more information about Aptar's product offerings, please send an email to info@aptar.com
